Monthly Newsletter - Shortages Galore!

Updated: Aug 14, 2022

We have some important updates and questions which have come through over the past month. To keep everyone in touch we send out this email. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Due to Covid, there have been temporary shutdowns in ONE of the manufacturing plants of Omnipaque. This has resulted in supply chain issues leading to a shortage of Omnipaque. You can read more from the AHA and GE by clicking here. GE Healthcare states they do not expect normal production to resume until the end of June.

The ASHP has released a letter with advice on strategies on conservation of Omnipaque. You can read more about that by clicking here. Please remember Omnipaque is a single dose vial, therefore it cannot be saved from patient to patient. The American College of Radiology is aware of the shortages being faced and offered the following statement. Toward the bottom of the article, their Appendix A - Contrast Media Specifications offers potential alternatives.

During recent surveys, there have been questions as to the validity of shortages. Surveyors and accrediting bodies are questioning whether a medication is truly in short supply, and the alternative sizes of medications ordered. If a medication is in shortage, the center must continue to order and document lack of availability of the medication from multiple suppliers.

We are in the process of providing an updated expiration date policy. The policy would be a sample and would require updating on a Center by Center basis. We will be sending out this sample policy shortly.

Finally last but not least is the compiled list of FDA shortages. Please remember this list is not complete, but a general release.
